I have no idea exactly how it will work but as a general idea, I would take book suggestions/come up with a book, read it and post my review here. If you have your own blog you can also post a review or if you don't have a blog or don't want to post you can just pop your view of the book in the comments section.
What do you say? Yay or Nay?
I'll start shall I?
I just finished Zeitoun by Dave Eggers. It is about a Syrian family living in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina. The main character, Zeitoun, is a painter and runs his own business so that when yet another storm threatens the coast he decides to stay behind when his wife, 4 children and dog leave town.
I found this book easy to read but in general I didn't really feel like there was much of a point, it didn't really have much of a climax. It was an interesting read especially considering that my knowledge of what happened after Katrina in New Orleans was limited to the small amounts of information reported here in Australia.
One thing that frustrated me is that people choose to stay behind during a city mandatory evacuation and then expect rescue when they are unable to leave on their own accord after the storm. I know that many people simply have no where to go and the city provided option of the super dome, was clearly not an appropriate choice for many. I also found it heartbreaking that anyone would leave their pets behind to die. I don't know what it is about animals being hurt in books and movies but I really find it difficult to handle.
What I liked was the discussion around Zeitoun's wife and her conversion to Muslim. It was interesting to read from one personal description of what drew her to a change of religion and how her family still do not acknowledge that it was her choice before she even met her husband.
Overall I would give it a 6/10 but it is definitely an easy read.
Has anyone read Zeitoun? What did you think of the book?
