This is usually how my runs go - ooh, I am going faster than usual, I feel good. Ok now I am going my usual average pace thats ok I went fast at the beginning, then it drops down to "oh god, just keep going, as long as you are running.".
Then I die....
Ok, maybe I don't actually die (I always finish with a big smile on my face) but I am doing everything possible just to finish. I try to run a little faster at the start when I am nice and fresh and feel like I can run for miles. The further into a race I get the more tired I get and so the slower I go. If I am running in the last 2-3km then I feel like I am doing well, no matter what my speed.
Sydney Harbour 10km
6:23, 6:39, 6:54, 6:51, 6:43, 7:10, 7:08, 7:19, 7:08 and 6:49 - I clearly took a bit of a surge towards the end there but in general I was getting slower. This was also a virtually flat course, so hence the less than a minute of variability in my pace.
Run Club Handicap Race
8:16, 9:03, 6:54, 6:50, 7:16, 8:19, 7:46, 6:11, 6:27 - This was all over the place but I actually finished really strong (well, strong for me)! This was a mighty hilly course though.
So, this weekend is the City 2 Surf 14km fun run. The last 2-3km (from memory) is downhill. So I want to aim to be doing those in the 6's, otherwise known as anything faster than 6:59/km.
Stay tuned for the race recap to see how it goes!
