This is quite possibly the greatest slow cooked meal I have ever eaten. So much so that I made this last Monday and we are having it again tonight! It made the entire kitchen smell delicious and it was really very quick and easy.
The original recipe is from my new favourite website taste.com, just with some slight modifications. I am no expert on thai cooking but it was simply out of necessity that I changed these items - I did not include kafir lime leaves, I used raw sugar instead of palm sugar and I used canola oil instead of peanut oil. Finally, as a twitter friend once said, why use 2 cloves of garlic when you can use 8?
This bad boy went into the slow cooker for 8 hours on low, plus about another hour or two on keep warm. Everything was so incredibly tender and delicious. Right about this point (just popped it into the pot), I texted Mr Olive saying "its going to be awesome, it actually smells just like Massaman!".
After 8 or 10 hours it had bubbled itself to a deliciousness of flavour and that cinnamon stick had really done its job. I feel totally professional using stuff like cinammon sticks and cardamon in a recipe.
So the first time I completely forgot to take a picture before my husband was licking his bowl! This time I was so excited I could barely contain myself but I managed to snap a quick one before I inhaled it.
The first time we made it, I used the required vegetables as detailed in the recipe. The next time I used half sweet potato and half regular potato - word to the wise, sweet potato cant really handle 8+ hours in the slow cooker in this recipe.
We served it with Jasmine rice for dinner, but the next day I tend to take it with Cous Cous for lunch! Delicious both ways, but I think the rice is a little more traditional considering it is a thai dish. This is seriously so much better than the one from our local thai restaurant. Although not sure how economical it would be for them to slow cook their massaman!
I am sorry about the poor picture quality, my camera was out of battery so these are courtesy of my iPhone!

This does look really good! Although I'm pretty much a fun of all crockpot recipes, especially when there's a ton of leftover. I love including a cinnamon stick, and can't wait to try that out myself!
